Burke Virginia is a great location in Fairfax County. Farmer’s Markets, family friendly events, and generally beautiful landscape greet both visitor and resident.
During a dinner with Mr. and Mrs. B, I leaned that they love their home and its central location in Burke. They have been diligent in its care and upkeep. After ten years, Mrs. B wanted a home gym, but Mr. B’s shop area was in the unfinished basement. Over time, Mrs. B was able to convince her husband that it was time to give the basement a real overhaul. FW&D previously remodeled their den, and due to that excellent work, Mr. and Mrs. B called FW&D to construct a finished workout area in their unfinished basement.

Included in that project was the following:
•    finish ceiling
•    install a wall to separate a “shop room” from the new “gym” area
•    install an oversized pocket door to separate shop room from basement gym
•    recessed lights in gym
•    fluorescent lights in shop
•    shelving
•    painting
•    carpeting on finished basement floor
•    remove 3 feet of wall at the base of the steps
•    install handrail, pickets, and carpet on stairs
•    replace 2 sliding windows
•    enlarge window opening to install a new county approved basement egress window.

This is only a portion of the list, and the details involved in bringing this together were numerous. Permits were pulled and inspections were passed. Miss Utility was called to ensure that proper clearance of underground utilities was maintained during the excavation necessary for the egress window.

There was something of a dance occurring between the material order and delivery, installation, painting, and final approvals, but Mr. and Mrs. B were ecstatic about the changes taking place in their home. The ceiling of the basement was finished with drywall, changing the whole area from a cargo space into a living space. The fluorescent lights in the workshop and recessed lights in the gym area created a whole new feel to both areas.

Mrs. B was quite pleased with her new home gym.

The new rooms gave Mrs. B the workout area she wanted, while still allowing Mr. B to keep his shop area. The basement is now fully appreciated and regularly used.

A quick post to update the photo catalog on the Burke Remodel. The stone has been installed and a few feet of the Bruce flooring laid.

It’s been a week since I posted an update on the Burke Virginia remodel. In that time we installed or made changes to quite a few items that don’t show well pictorially. Those items are changing the basement lights from a pull cord to a wall switch, making minor changes in the powder room, adding electrical service to the living room, add wiring circuit for surround sound system, running new electric circuits to the den, run a new gas line to the fireplace in the den, and wait for inspection on new gas and electric service lines. After inspection we cover up or drywall the areas, add a lintel and firebrick to the fireplace to accomodate the size of the new custom fireplace screen , and start setting cabinets. Now it looks like we’re making progress but in reality we did get a lot of small time consuming projects completed. Once we get the cabinets set we’ll install the stone veneer on the fireplace, new fire rated door to garage, new hardwood floors and a paint job. Stay tuned for updated pictures.

Well the day has finally arrived when all of the materials that were
ordered have been shipped and received and FW&D LLC could schedule the start of an interesting remodel project located in Burke, Virginia. We are going to transform the den into a much more user friendly family space. The homeowners want to remove the 70’s looking brick and replace it with stone, add cabinetry and bookcases on each side of the fireplace, add a gas fireplace starter, wire the cabinets for cable TV, sound surround audio system, and separate electrical circuits. We will also add a floor electrical receptacle, install hardwood flooring, and a new fire rated door from the den to the garage.

Let’s get started on the demo. First we seal the the work area from the living area with a plastic wall. Then we start removing the brick from the end wall. The brick will be recycled and incorporated into an outdoor project. A friend asked if he could have the firewood storage box and we told him we could move that to his house with no problem.
