Planning Your Kitchen Remodel Project
Whether you’re looking to do a home addition, kitchen and bath design, kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel and more, selecting the right kitchen remodeling contractor or general contractor is one of the most, if not the most important step.
If you want to remodel your kitchen but are having difficulty visualizing the new space. Here’s a quick kitchen remodel idea or method that I like to use. Basically, I measure and mark the floor with pencil and then, using blue tape, I define the new boundaries. You can also use chairs or stools, as seen in the picture below, to create physical boundaries to help get a feel for the space.

Here’s a job we started and finished this morning. Started at 8:30 am. Finished by 10 am. What do you like about it? Send us your thoughts.
We know you love your newly remodeled kitchen by FW&D, and are proud to invite family and company for thanksgiving dinner, but why spend all of your time in the kitchen when you could be enjoying the visit with loved ones. We came across this interesting article on how to cook a turkey in 2 hours. I think the secret is brining the turkey overnight. My granddaughter did this a few years ago and we ate the most delicious and moist turkey I have ever had. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out or if you have a family favorite please share with us.

Below is a transcript of a letter we just received:
Dear Principals of FW&D:
The job was memorable. The overall renovation was performed in an organized and safe manner. The crew maintained a clean workspace even though it was a messy job (lots of drywall work and removal of a difficult countertop and tile in a 1955 bathroom). The completed work was terrific. We were preparing to put the house up for sale and FW&D’s work has really enhanced our home.
The crew that worked on the job was both skilled and resourceful. This included: Mauricio, Eddie, Jose, Juan, Richard and perhaps others. Dave Simmons was there to lead the work and quality-check all the daily and final results. You are very fortunate to have Dave for customer service job oversight. He is knowledgeable and helpful to both the customer and crew. He offered a number of good suggestions that I took when he evaluated the job. He understand the customer’s objectives and is able to communicate the customers’ wishes to the crew. And, the crew works hard to provide good results.
We would be happy to provide referrals. You may use my name and phone number for this professional purpose.
Sincerely,
Cherie Fitzgerald
A Super Satisfied Client!
To whom it may concern:
Recently, I had a basement renovation, and follow-on repair to a stairway wall, completed by Fairlington Window & Door LLC of Arlington, VA. Their craftmanship and results were superb. I would hire FW&D again and I would recommend FW&D to my friends. In fact, a friend recommended FW&D to me because she was pleased with their work. Their great reputation was well deserved.
For the renovation of my basement, FW&D gutted and replaced most of the ceiling, walls and floors. The old “popcorn” style ceiling and dated light fixtures were replaced with a modern flat surface ceiling and multiple recessed lights. Sheet rock, drywall and fresh paint replaced the old, painted over, wood paneled walls. Multiple new electrical sockets and cable connections were added to the walls. In one room downstairs, a bookshelf and cabinet combination turned a dull basement room into a comfortable library. Last, but not least, the craftsmanship in the new tile floor throughout the basement was outstanding. This was true particularly at two angled steps leading to an exterior stairway. The tile fits together precisely at angles that required expert cuts. The renovation was more than a home improvement; it turned my basement into art.
After the renovation was done, I had a mishap with furniture that was too tight for the interior stairway. Damage was done. I called FW&D for help and withing a short period of time all repairs were made. Again, the work was perfect. I remain pleased with FW&D. The community should be proud to have such a fine company of experts available to improve its homes.
Sincerely,
Marc J. Thomas
Merlisa Lawrence Corbett of the Clarendon-Courthouse-Rosslyn Patch, a local chapter of Patch.com, interviewed FW&D’s own Ned Overton about remodeling small bathrooms.
On August 31, 2011, Merlisa published her article, “Big Ideas for Small Baths“, providing information about updating old bathrooms, how to best utilize small spaces, and the need for quality materials. The use of a knowledgeable contractor will ensure that each homeowner’s desire for personal style will be reflected best in their most intimate space.
She features the FW&D blog and uses images from our satisfied bathroom customers from Fairlington, Virginia.
To be featured by Merlisa was quite an honor for us.
What can FW&D do for you?
Many of our clients in Fairlington have different floor plans. Homes facing different directions give shifts of light and depth perception that give subtle sweetness to home ownership. After a wonderful bathroom remodeling project, Mrs. R. requested FW&D return to her Edgewood Unit and remodel her kitchen.
Ms. R felt that it was time to do some kitchen upgrades, and she was happy to join forces with FW&D once again. Plumbing, recessed ceiling lights, and one under cabinet light were just a few of the items rebuilt or remodeled in this project.
Painted Kraftmaid cabinets, Bamboo colored Silestone countertop and backsplash set off the stainless steel sink. Mrs. R.’s stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, and garbage disposal were reinstalled after semi-gloss paint was applied to her walls. Not only that, FW&D created a peninsula with cabinets facing both dining room and kitchen.

For this month’s Restaurant Review, FW&D looked for a traditional summertime experience with a healthy twist. Joined by friends, FW&D made our way to Silver Diner, located right near the Springfield Mall.
For over 20 years, Silver Diner has been a staple in the area. Executive Chef Ype Von Hengst and Bob Giaimo are local owners, and have been so since they opened their first diner in 1989. They grew up with the Diner experience, and the American Icon holds a special place in their hearts. Before opening, they traveled to over 500 diners throughout the USA, and with the help of Paddy Meskell, the Executive VP of Operations, there are 17 diners throughout Maryland, DC, and Virginia, successfully “[bridging] the gap between tablecloth restaurants and fast food”.
The interior is full of music, color, energy, and smiles. The friendliness of the members of staff is as obvious as Silver Diner’s cool decor and signs for “Kid Night”. Everything about the American Diner is represented with fun, and that is before you sit down at a table (or booth, where there are tabletop jukeboxes). Date night, Family Time, or a quick bite, Silver Diner is a great spot!
The first thing you will notice about the menu is that the selection is huge! Burgers, Shakes, and Fries are definitely on the menu, but breakfast is served all day, and there’s so much more! Next you will notice the menu is full of locally grown, naturally healthy items. Executive chef Ype says, “I buy fresh, local & healthier whenever I can.” Nitrate, hormone, antibiotic, and gluten free selections are abundant throughout the menu, but the selections are as abundant as the old time jukebox music.
You’ve got to try at least one appetizer. FW&D went with the Buffalo wings, which were tangy, but not too hot, and could be easily enjoyed by the extremely young, as well as the young at heart. “Roasted in-house, then fried, local, antibiotic free wings with celery and blue cheese dressing” would be a great opener for your meal.
From there, you have to be careful. It’s really easy to get lost in so many dinner entrée choices, and speaking of being young at heart, one great thing about Silver Diner‘s menu is that there are kids entrées.
Since we had small children with us for this particular taste bud trip, it was nice to see that the local chicken strips were accompanied by fresh strawberries (which were of course locally grown).
Another great entrée choice you really won’t go wrong with is the Cajun Chicken Pasta. The flavor is nice and light, but with a nice rich flavor. With a creamy garlic sauce full of vegetables and parmesan cheese, you almost don’t need the two huge slices of garlic bread that come with it.
If you’re into salad with your chicken, the Chopped Asian Chicken Salad is remarkably tasty. It’s not to heavily seasoned, and the lettuce and cabbage combination is crisp (not as crispy as the wontons though). Black sesame seeds and edamame beans are mixed with other vegetables and spices, before it is tossed with Thai dressing. You’ll truly enjoy it.
You are sure to enjoy the Shrimp Scampi. The shrimp is plump and flavored well with Basil and garlic. Angel hair pasta is seasoned with garlic sauce and then covered in scallions, tomatoes, and mushrooms. This dish also makes great leftovers to enjoy for the next day’s lunch!
If you just want a good old-fashioned burger, you don’t have to worry. Silver Diner has the signature burger and fries selection ready and waiting. The buns are buttered, the Creekstone Farms beef is antibiotic and hormone free, the bacon is nitrate free, and the flavor is just a good as it can get. Bleu cheese crumbs, onion straws with a little A-1 and honey mustard to send the flavor into high gear. Add some fries, and you are set.
If you want a little adventure with your burger, the Bison is a great choice. Star, one of Silver Diner’s trainers, and our server for the night explained that Bison, if cooked too much, loses its flavor. It’s best tasting when still pink in the middle. You should follow her advice. She was right, and the flavor a definitely nice shift from the beef.
Now, whether you are in a large group, or by yourself, you will definitely enjoy the main course of your Silver Diner meal.
Despite not having any room once you finish your most scrumptious dinner, the desserts are not to be ignored. FW&D tried a few, and we were not disappointed. Malt Shakes, Banana Splits, and Berry Cobbler (all with healthy, local ingredients) will please the taste buds, and bring yet more smiles.
Have fun! Be healthy! Eat well! Amazing food and a nostalgic, friendly atmosphere will bring you back for more. Silver Diner is one of the great examples of an American Diner experience, and you will definitely return. FW&D certainly will!
