In this video, you will see how you can gain easier access to your attic by installing pull down stairs. If you have outdated stairs, they can also be replaced, the opening widened and there are a few options in terms of stair types. If you or someone you know is tired of having to set up a ladder on the floor to get in your attic or are afraid your stairs will fail at any moment, let us come out and inspect them and make some recommendations. You’ll be glad you did!

Planning Your Kitchen Remodel Project

Whether you’re looking to do a home addition, kitchen and bath design, kitchen remodel, bathroom remodel and more, selecting the right kitchen remodeling contractor or general contractor is one of the most, if not the most important step.

If you want to remodel your kitchen but are having difficulty visualizing the new space. Here’s a quick kitchen remodel idea or method that I like to use. Basically, I measure and mark the floor with pencil and then, using blue tape, I define the new boundaries. You can also use chairs or stools, as seen in the picture below, to create physical boundaries to help get a feel for the space.

Below is a transcript of a letter we just received:

Dear Principals of FW&D:

The job was memorable. The overall renovation was performed in an organized and safe manner. The crew maintained a clean workspace even though it was a messy job (lots of drywall work and removal of a difficult countertop and tile in a 1955 bathroom). The completed work was terrific. We were preparing to put the house up for sale and FW&D’s work has really enhanced our home.

The crew that worked on the job was both skilled and resourceful. This included: Mauricio, Eddie, Jose, Juan, Richard and perhaps others. Dave Simmons was there to lead the work and quality-check all the daily and final results. You are very fortunate to have Dave for customer service job oversight. He is knowledgeable and helpful to both the customer and crew. He offered a number of good suggestions that I took when he evaluated the job. He understand the customer’s objectives and is able to communicate the customers’ wishes to the crew. And, the crew works hard to provide good results.

We would be happy to provide referrals. You may use my name and phone number for this professional purpose.

Sincerely,

Cherie Fitzgerald

Many of our clients in Fairlington have different floor plans. Homes facing different directions give shifts of light and depth perception that give subtle sweetness to home ownership. After a wonderful bathroom remodeling project, Mrs. R. requested FW&D return to her Edgewood Unit and remodel her kitchen.

Ms. R felt that it was time to do some kitchen upgrades, and she was happy to join forces with FW&D once again. Plumbing, recessed ceiling lights, and one under cabinet light were just a few of the items rebuilt or remodeled in this project.

Painted Kraftmaid cabinets, Bamboo colored Silestone countertop and backsplash set off the stainless steel sink. Mrs. R.’s stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, and garbage disposal were reinstalled after semi-gloss paint was applied to her walls. Not only that, FW&D created a peninsula with cabinets facing both dining room and kitchen.

FW&D did some more work in Fairlington. We like the area.

Ms. M, the woman who referred her good friend (our fun loving homeowner Carole), wanted to make some changes to her kitchen, and FW&D was happy to be a part of the change.

FW&D gave this kitchen a complete overhaul, including demolition, materials, electrical installation for lights under the cabinet and recessed in the ceiling, plumbing, framing and drywall, flooring, backsplash construction, appliances, paint, and a partridge in a pear tree.

Talk about everything but the kitchen sink, and FW&D upgraded that too. We installed Maple cabinets, hardware knobs, and a beautiful granite countertop with a glazed ceramic tile backsplash to go with the ceramic flooring and paint.

FW&D did work in a Fairlington home last month. The homeowner, named Carole, lived there since “before I was a hippy”, according to her.

Carole decided her bathroom was in need of a complete remodel. She had also decided to make some changes the ceiling in her kitchen. Now, throughout her life, Carole had managed to acquire many beautiful and unique pieces for each room, especially the kitchen and bathroom. FW&D was happy to be involved with the revamping of her home.

Removed drop ceiling, installed recessed lights and painted

In the kitchen FW&D installed recessed lights, removed the drop ceiling, and replaced the crown molding before painting. It was so much fun to hear Carole talk about the ways her wall pocket collection has grown as she moved them for the project. At last count, she had over three hundred wall pockets. She happily looked forward to returning her vast (and still growing) collection of knick knacks to their place after the remodeling was done. .

Unfortunately, she was not able to put them back exactly the way she wanted, but she had  more than enough patience (and a photo map) to get the job done.

Over three hundred pieces in her wall pocket collection!

FW&D also happily worked on her bathroom.

FW&D hard at work installing soaking tub

We installed a pedestal lavatory sink, comfort height toilet, new soaking tub and faucets, ceramic flooring, a new ceramic tub soap dish, corner shelves, and a safety bars.

Once her bathroom was completed, Carole hung a colored glass window cover she’d had there previously.

The colored glass window cover is a great finishing touch to the bath remodel completed by FW&D, and turned her bathroom into an amazing retreat space (at least while in use).

“We followed up on several FW&D references and even visited one of your Fairlington kitchen remodels last night. Everything came back very positive and the kitchen remodel looked fantastic. We want to go with FW&D for our kitchen remodel as soon as possible.”

FW&D was appreciative of the kind words, and glad to have such a thorough client. Mr. B, who lives in Fairlington, had good reason to be. “My wife is pregnant and due in a few months,” he told us in an email. Time was of the essence, but he also wanted to ensure that the health of his pregnant wife and their child would not be affected by VOCs*, in the paint used during the kitchen remodel project. There was also testing for lead, which came back negative thankfully.

White painted maple cabinets, hardware knobs, natural stone backsplash tile, ceramic flooring, paint, under cabinet lights, stainless steel sink and appliances, faucet, and all necessary building materials were provided by FW&D.

Mr. B even upgraded to black pearl for his countertop, which gave a dramatic effect to the already well planned kitchen upgrade.

Kitchen remodel before and after

A nearby neighbor saw FW&D attention to detail during the process, and the beautiful outcome, and signed up for her own Kitchen Remodel Project.

* According to the EPA, Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. FW&D was happy to comply.

FW&D got a call from Ms. P., who was having a leak in her service line to the toilet. It needed urgent repair. Since she lives in a multi-family building, Arlington County was notified to shut off the water to the building. The county information showed the water was turned off, but when FW&D came to perform the service, water flowed freely. The water valve map was incorrect, and FW&D immediately had to find the alternate shut off valve.

After a good laugh, FW&D confirmed that the correct shut-off valve was located and the toilet was removed. The work was completed in 20 minutes.  We replaced the wax ring, reinstalled the toilet and replaced the supply line shutoff valve. Mrs. P was pleased with our work and our attitude.

She even sent us a note.

From Mrs. P

It started with FW&D. Finished floors throughout the home, Kitchen and Bath Remodeling projects, and of course Window Replacement.  Add to that a painter. Then call upon an interior decorator to help find pieces to bring gentle shifts of color and elegance in each room. The collaboration ended with a home worthy of recognition.

View from the dining room towards the front door

The presentation and décor within the home caught the attention of The Fairlington Historical Society, and this wonderfully decorated living space became one of the ten homes in the 2011 Fairlington Home and Garden Tour. The paragraph about this Edgewood Model was quite quaint.

Tour this charming end unit Edgewood that preserves the feel of 1940s Fairlington, while providing all the comforts of a modern home. This original kitchen cabinets have been reworked to a flawless condition, and notice the granite inlay top on the wine bar in the dining room. Laminate flooring has been added in the downstairs where there is a guest suite and office. Upstairs features include a cabana-striped bathroom and a cozy reading nook in the Master bedroom. The beautiful décor throughout makes this a “restoration” worth seeing. Exit through the lovely garden and notice the stamped concrete placed over the existing concrete patio.

FW&D attended the Home and Garden Tour, and while each house was amazing in its own right, this house held special significance to us, because we were a part of it. A few days later, the owner let FW&D return and take photos, just so we could share them with you now. Below is a slide show of the home. We here at FW&D hope you enjoy it.
